Dog survives in Long Island plane crash: police.

Two people died Saturday morning when a small plane crashed on Long Island less than 20 minutes after it took off, police said.

The six-passenger Beechcraft A36 plane crashed in Southold around 9:15 a.m., the Federal Aviation Authority said.

A man and woman on board were killed, Southold Chief of Police Martin Flately said. Their names and ages were not immediately released.

A dog that was on the plane survived the crash, escaped the wreckage and ran off, according to police. A local farmer later found the dog, police said.

Flately says the aircraft was flying from Long Island’s MacArthur Airport to New Bedford, Massachusetts, when it experienced “some type of mechanical failure” and crashed.

The plane crashed in a field on Harbes Family Farm on Sound Avenue, police said. The farm posted a message on Facebook saying that singing hayrides in the barnyard were cancelled on Saturday “due to unforseen circumstances.”
